If you’ve ever wondered what our group sessions actually look like in practice, here’s a peek behind the door.
At The Home Ed Workshop, our sessions are designed to feel welcoming, purposeful, and alive with curiosity. They’re not school. They’re not drop-off clubs. They’re shared learning spaces where children explore ideas through doing, making, questioning, and connecting.
🌍 Topic-Led, Hands-On Learning
Each group revolves around a theme that sparks imagination and inquiry. Over time, we’ve explored topics such as:
Harry Potter
Dinosaurs
Ancient Egypt
Mythology and the Romans
Science
Weather
Geography
Famous authors
The Romans
And so much more!
These themes aren’t used as surface decoration. They act as a launchpad for a wide range of hands-on activities, discussions, and creative challenges. Children might be building, experimenting, drawing, problem-solving, storytelling, or collaborating with others, depending on the session
✂️ Thoughtfully Prepared Resources
Every resource used in our sessions is custom made by us.
We don’t rely on recycled worksheets or generic downloads. Each activity is carefully planned to:
Encourage engagement rather than passive completion
Be adaptable for different ages and abilities
Support curiosity, creativity, and confidence
A lot of time goes into preparation behind the scenes so that sessions feel smooth, relaxed, and rich once families arrive.
When you arrive
As you walk in, you will find our sign in area. This really helps us keep track of who has attended. This space also doubles as our quiet zone. Here you will find LEGO, colouring, board games, and sometimes a film playing, usually linked to our workshop theme. It is a calm, low pressure space for children who need a gentler start or a moment to reset.
The main hall🏛
As you enter the main hall, you will be greeted by thoughtfully arranged tables, each set up with hands on activities. Every activity is carefully planned and created by us, with clear instructions set at the station and all resources provided so that every child can take part.
Activities can be completed in any order, at your own pace, throughout your time with us.
Working together 🤝
We ask everyone to help clean up after themselves as part of being a kind and supportive community. Bins are available in every room, and the kitchen is where we wash anything painty, slimey, or food related.
If you need help at any point, please just ask. We are always nearby and happy to support.
👶 Spaces for Different Needs
We know that children engage best when they can choose how they participate. Our sessions include:
A toddler area for younger siblings
A quieter space for drawing and calm activities.
A LEGO and STEM area for builders and thinkers.
Access to a play park for movement and fresh air.
Children are free to move between spaces, allowing them to regulate themselves and follow their interests.
☕ A Welcoming Environment for Families
We aim to create a space that works for the whole family, not just the children.
Small snacks are available for children
Hot drinks are provided for adults.
We have a working kitchen, which we sometimes use to cook hearty dishes together or make food as part of the learning experience.
Disabled parking and facilities are available to ensure accessibility.
These small details matter. They help create an atmosphere where families can settle in, stay present, and enjoy learning together.
🤝 Community at the Heart
Our group sessions are about more than activities. They’re about connection. Children build friendships, practise social skills, and feel part of a wider home-ed community. Parents get the chance to chat, share experiences, and feel less alone on their journey.
🌱 Beyond the Sessions
Our commitment doesn’t stop at the group doors.
We also:
Meticulously plan and prepare resources for our Home Ed Workshop community
uploading free activities on our website so other families can join in the fun at home.
Arrange meet ups for learning or just for fun! (including theatre shows)
Have super fun discos!
Offer support and advice from a qualified education specialist but most importantly parents who care.
We believe high-quality, joyful learning should be shared generously.
